Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does Gay-ville work?
Gay-ville is a website where guests can rent apartments from hosts. Guests search for a place which matches their criteria, and then make a reservation request for the listing they have chosen. It's vital to keep communication and transactions through Gay-ville to ensure safety and follow our terms of use. When guests make a reservation, they give their payment details, but we do not charge any money. The payment is made only when the reservation gets approved by the host. The money is transferred to the host within 2 to 3 days after the guest checks in. This gives everybody the chance to confirm that everything is the same as agreed at the time when the reservation was made. Later on, after the guest's stay both host and guest write a review on each other to create a good name for themselves for further bookings.
  • When was Gay-ville launched?
Gay-ville was launched in the summer of 2011 and since then has expanded in terms of number of apartments, rooms and reservations.
  • How can I contact Gay-ville?
By submitting a contact form. This can be found in the Contact Us menu. We always make sure to answer each request or question, though we suggest before submission that you review the FAQ section since it might contain the answer to your question.
  • I'm a member of the media. Who do I contact for more info?
By submitting the same contact form in the Contact Us menu.
  • Is Gay-ville on any social networks?
Yes, we are! This is a link to our Facebook official page:
Feel free to drop by and Like us!
  • Does Gay-ville screen users?
Gay-ville does not officially screen users, but we do have a number of ways to create safety on the site, and hosts can always decline any reservation request from a guest who doesn't seem trustworthy to them. Both guests & hosts benefit from the reviews as it creates a system of feedback which is an indication to whether the user is safe and trustworthy or not.
  • Is Gay-ville international?
We are! Gay-ville has apartments all over the world in different continents. However, as a site which specializes in gay tourism, we are aware that some destinations are more gay-friendly than others, so we try to match what we have on offer and the demand of vacation-goers for specific popular destinations.
  • Why is it necessary to keep communication and transactions on Gay-ville?
For safety reasons mainly. We know how the virtual world can be unsafe (especially when money is involved). We provide a system which protects both the host & the guest in terms of payment (which goes through us) and also on a social level (from feedback given in reviews) to make sure neither guest nor host encounter fraud or undesired personal issues with other users.

This is something you should finalize by messaging your host on the site.

  • What if I can't reach my host during my stay?
If you've tried all contact possibilities and still couldn't get a hold of the host, please contact us and we will take care of the problem.
  • What if the host asks me for more money when I arrive?
All pricing details should be detailed at time of reservation on the apartment's profile. Some hosts ask for security deposit which is to be paid at time of check-in. These additional fees should be written on the apartment's profile. If the host asks for more money once you have arrived and these fees weren't mentioned before, please let us know and we'll contact the host.

By contacting & requesting us to cancel the account. It's important to mention that even if your apartment isn't available at the moment or forever, you can still keep your account for other future apartments (For example in case of moving, you can delete your previous apartment and add your current one).
  • Why isn't my listing appearing in search results?
Make sure you've put the right information in each criterion. Make sure it has future available dates, at least one picture, that you have set your payment method correctly and confirmed your email account.

Managing my listing

  • My address is shown incorrectly on the map. How can I fix it?
First make sure you've written the address fully and correctly without any abbreviations. You can change your address by editing the details on the apartment's profile.
  • Does my listing need to have photos?
You can post an apartment without pictures technically but it won't show up on the search results as it makes the apartment "unattractive" to guests who search and want to see apartments before they book.
  • How do I edit my listing?
By going to Listings and then Edit Listing on your profile.
  • How do I add photos to my listing?
By going to Listings, Edit Listing and then Photos on your profile.
  • How do I include a security deposit on my listing?
That and other additional fees info you can add in the description part of the apartment's profile.
  • How do I delete my listing/duplicate listing?
By contacting & requesting us to delete the listing.
  • How do I set variable/seasonal pricing for my listing?
It is possible to change the price daily on the calendar or write it in the description box.
  • How can I get on the first page of search results?
Gay-ville doesn't "prefer" apartments over others. The order in which the apartments appear is set by the Sort By button which enables guests to search by price, recommendations, mutual friends in Facebook and more. So, if a guest sorts the results by price then the apartments will appear from cheapest on page 1 to the most expensive on the last page.
  • How do I use the availability calendar?
By marking and adding the dates. Green marked dates are available; red are booked dates; white means unavailable; and yellow means new pending booking requests.

Booking & payment

  • How much does it cost to list on Gay-ville?
Nothing. We offer a free platform for hosts in which they can publish their property.
  • How and when do I get paid?
According to our cancellation policies, as long as we don't get complaints from the guest, you will get fully paid 1 day after the guest checks in. The payment is made via PayPal but you don't need to have a PayPal account for that. Please note there's a PayPal commission in addition to the payment, which PayPal sets according to its policy.
  • How does Gay-ville handle security deposits?
The host should state in the apartment's description (there's a special field for that) the level of the security deposit, which the host charges directly from the guest as he arrives. Gay-ville doesn't charge this deposit and doesn't take care of this matter aside from stating the level of the security deposit in the apartment's description.
  • I received a reservation request. What do I do now?
Now you have up to 24 hours to accept or decline the reservation request. In order to prevent waiting time for the guest we would you like to respond quickly to the request so the guest will have enough time to search for other alternatives in case you decline.
  • Why can't I call or send an email to potential guests before they book?
For safety and privacy purposes. Just like we don't share your personal details with the guest, we don't share the guest's. The convenient messaging system allows hosts & guests to communicate with each other (though personal details such as phone numbers and email addresses cannot be displayed within a message).
  • What do I do if a guest wants to see my place before booking?
According to Gay-ville's policy, guests aren't allowed to view apartments before booking due to the safety of the host. If a host allows this to happen, it is the host's responsibility, as we don't encourage such an act.
  • Do you support foreign currencies?
We support several different currencies. You can see the list of currencies in the currency menu.
  • As a host, how do I cancel a confirmed reservation?
As a host, you're not supposed to cancel confirmed reservations, except in special cases. In such a case you should contact Gay-ville as soon as possible so that we can help the guest to find other alternatives.
  • What are your cancellation policies?
Gay-ville has numerous cancellation policies. Click here to find out more.
  • What happens if the guest cancels their reservation?
If a guest cancels, the cancellation policies applies to him. If a guest isn't satisfied with the apartment and cancels the reservation during the first 48 hours of their stay, we will act according to the individual case in question.
  • How do I collect taxes for the booking?
The apartment's rate should include taxes in case there are any.
  • Will I need to pay income taxes on my earnings?
This depends on the apartment's location, where you live and your citizenship. You as the host are responsible for taxes and you will have to find out from your local authorities what rules apply.

During & after the sublet

  • What happens if I feel unsafe once my guest arrives?
As the host of the apartment you shouldn't feel unsafe in your own place. If this were to happen we would like you to contact us as soon as possible.
  • If I have pets that need to be taken care of, how will I know the guest will take care of them?
You can first of all write it in the description part of the apartment's profile. Guests who have a problem with this won't book your place. You can also send a message to the guests and make sure they are completely aware of this requirement.
  • How much interaction is required with my guest?
That is up to you! Each host has their own ability, timetable and desire to help. However when guests arrive in a new and foreign country, it is easier if there's a local who can assist them or even show them around.
  • What am I expected to provide for my guest?
You're expected to provide all the things you've mentioned on the apartment's profile as well as a warm, welcoming and friendly attitude - just think what you'd expect from a host if you were the guest yourself.
  • I have multiple listings. Can I move guests between them?
No. The guest reserved and paid for a specific apartment. Other apartments mean different facilities (and sometimes rates) which might not meet the guest's criteria.
  • What do I do once my guest leaves?
First make sure everything is in its place. If there's a problem, please contact us immediately. If everything goes very well, you can always write a good review about the guest.
  • How do reviews work?
Reviews are a great way to create trust and safety. The more reviews a person gets the bigger the picture other users get of that user, whether it's a host, who's got a reservation from a guest and wants to know if that person is reliable, or a guest who wants to find out if the apartment's host is trustworthy and safe.
  • I received a negative review. Can I remove it?
No, you cannot. Users (guests or hosts) can only remove a review they wrote themselves. The whole point of reviews is that it should reflect the truth. If a host gave a guest bad hospitality, other users should know about it, the same goes for hosts getting a "bad" guest. Please remember that a person usually doesn't write a negative review unless it's true.
  • How do I earn good reviews?
By being a responsible and hospitable person who helps his guests and provides them what they need. Satisfied guests happily write good reviews and recommend a host to other people if they had a good experience. You can always ask your guest to write a review.
  • What if I don't have any reviews?
It's still OK. Reviews are just an extra tool which helps guests to decide before booking, but there are other parameters such as price, apartment size and pictures which are just as important for the guest. If you still want good reviews, you can simply try to be a better host.
